1955 - James Dean Dies

On this day, 24-year-old actor James Dean dies in a car accident.

Although Dean appeared in only three movies during his brief movie career, he made a deep impression on American audiences with his portrayal of the angry, restless young man. His three films were Rebel Without a Cause (1955), East of Eden (1955), and Giant (1956).

Born in Marion, Indiana to Winton and Mildred Wilson Dean, James Dean and his family moved to Santa Monica, California six years after his father had left farming to become a dental technician. Dean was enrolled in Brentwood Public School until his mother died of cancer in 1940.

At age nine, Dean was sent by his father to live with his aunt Ortense and uncle Marcus Winslow on a farm in Fairmount, Indiana, where he was brought up with a Quaker influence. In high school Dean played on the school basketball team and studied forensics and drama. After graduating from Fairmount High School in 1949, Dean moved back to California to live with his father and stepmother.

He enrolled in Santa Monica College (SMCC), pledged to the Sigma Nu fraternity and majored in pre-law. Dean transferred to the University of California, Los Angeles and changed his major to drama, resulting in estrangement from his father.

John Clayton Mayer genre with the formation of the (b. October 16, 1977) is an AmericanGrammy Award-winning singer-songwriter and guitarist. Originally from Connecticut, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia, in 1998 to pursue his career full-time. He soon made a name for himself, and has had success both commercially and critically. After originally performing mainly acoustic pop, in 2005 he made a transition towards the bluesJohn Mayer Trio. He also is known for collaborating with many artists from a variety of musical genres.

Mayer's other interests include stand-up comedy and writing; he has written articles for several magazines, most notably Esquire.

Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Mayer grew up in Fairfield, Connecticut, the middle of three sons. There, he became friends with future tennis star James Blake. Mayer attended Fairfield High School (now Fairfield Ward High School) for his freshman, sophomore, and senior years, but attended Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk, Connecticut for his junior year, where he was enrolled in the Center for Global Studies at Brien McMahon High School. Then known as the Center for Japanese Studies Abroad, it is a magnet program for students in Fairfield County wanting to learn Japanese.

Mayer listened to pop music, but it was not until the age of thirteen that his inspiration for playing the guitar began. When his father, a high school principal, gave him a confiscated tape player that contained an album by Stevie Ray Vaughan, Mayer discovered the blues and learned how to play the guitar. After two years of practice, he started playing at blues bars and other venues in the area. While in high school, he was in a band called Villanova Junction with Joe Beleznay, Tim Procaccini, and Rich Wolf.

When Mayer was seventeen, he was suddenly stricken with a cardiac arrhythmia that sent him to the hospital for a weekend. The trauma of the incident sparked his songwriting, and he penned his first lyrics the night he got home. Shortly thereafter, he began suffering from crippling panic attacks that only subsided when he was twenty-six, and even now he keeps a Xanax (an anti-anxiety drug) with him, just in case.

Mayer has a number of tattoos. These include: "Home Life" on the back of his arm (after the song off of the Heavier Things album), "SRV" (for his idol Stevie Ray Vaughan), "77" (his year of birth) on his left pectoralis major, and a Japanese style fish on his right deltoid. In 2003, he got a tattoo of three squares on his right forearm, which sparked a lot of questions. Mayer explains that he likes getting tattoos, but not having too many, so he will fill the three squares in gradually. As of 2006, two are filled.

Mayer dated Jennifer Love Hewitt briefly in 2002. In a comedy routine in May 2006, he joked they never consummated their relationship; he later apologized to her for the raunchy routine. Mayer has denied dating model Heidi Klum in 2003.

According to the August 29, 2006, issue of People, Mayer was rumored to be in a relationship with singer Jessica Simpson. The article actually followed a US Weekly magazine report claiming a confirmation for Simpson. The 26-year-old songstress attended Mayer's concert at the Nikon at Jones Beach Theater (Wantagh, New York) on August 30, 2006. However, when asked by Rosie O'Donnell in a September 5, 2006, episode of The View, Simpson stated "I am not actually dating John Mayer." It has been confirmed by sources for both Mayer and Simpson that there was never a romantic relationship.

John currently (as of 2006) resides in a suburb of Los Angeles with his roommate (and sound technician) Chad Franscoviak.

"So then I just decided to fight back a little bit and started doing my own thing again. The result is I hooked up with Ashlee Simpson. When Paris came back from Australia, they talked to each other and she found out about it.

"So I brought it up to her and said, 'You know what I did, and now it's your turn. Why don't you tell me what you did.' And she goes, 'I never did anything! I never cheated on you.' I had kind of started to really like Ashlee and I was thinking about the dating stage, then, before you know it [bleep]ing bitch-face comes back."

Carter, 26, told us he has no regrets, but still has a bitter taste in his mouth about Hilton. "I got so burnt over that whole Paris [bleep] with all this swinging and switching. Whatever happened to morals and values?" asked Nick, who's now working on a highly anticipated Backstreet Boys reunion album: "We've done about half of it so far."

Meanwhile, Aaron, 19, who has a new album due in February, says his own shotgun engagement last year to Playboy Playmate Kari Ann Peniche, who'd previously dated Nick, failed because he just wasn't ready to settle down. "It was just a big mess. She was pretty upset, but I just realized I made a mistake," he said.

And it wasn't a cheap mistake. While he never got her an engagement ring, "I bought her earrings for $10,000," Aaron confided. "And I need to get 'em, back. I need to get 'em back!" Good luck with that. source

Apparently Josh Brown is only a clutch player on the gridiron. In a recent interview with Yahoo! Sports, quarterback Matt Hasselbeck revealed that he attended a Carrie Underwood concert in training camp because the Seahawks' kicker needed a wingman to approach the American Idol country starlet (who, it should be noted, sang the National Anthem before the 'Hawks victory in the NFC Championship). Hasselbeck noted that things between the two seemed to go well:

We end up getting backstage and he got a chance to talk to her. They're both from Oklahoma, so they seemed to hit it off. She grew up a Cowboys fan, but I think she was a little more of a Seahawks fan by the end of the conversation. I think Josh won her over. But then she played in Puyallup and he chickened out and didn't go and I don't think he called her. I don't know what happened there, but I definitely want to know.

Uh, yeah, you and me and everybody else wants to know, too. I know he played the Cowboys card smoothly: Oh, you like the Cowboys? Yeah, I guess they're good. Francine Joy Drescher (born September 30, 1957) is an American film and televisionactress. She is famous for her nasal voice, "machine-gun" laugh, and Queens accent.

She's 49!

Drescher was born in Flushing, Queens, New York City to a Jewish family of Eastern European origin. Drescher grew up in Queens with her parents, Sylvia and Morty Drescher, and was a studious girl who was quite popular in school. Drescher attended Drescher was born in Flushing, Queens, New York City to a Jewish family of Eastern EuropeanHillcrest High School in Jamaica, Queens. At age fifteen, she met the man she believed that she would spend much of her life with, Peter Marc Jacobson. A year later, the two married.

Her first break was a bit part in the movie Saturday Night Fever (1977).

In January 1985, robbers ransacked Drescher's Los Angeles apartment and raped her and a friend at gunpoint. It took her many years to overcome this ordeal, and it took her even longer to admit this to the press. She was paraphrased as saying in an interview with Larry King that although it was a very negative experience, she found ways to turn her experience into something positive; she saw her rapist sent to prison.

She continued to play small but memorable roles in movies, until she finally created her own vehicle, The Nanny. She was visiting her friend, model Twiggy, in England and came up with the plotline. The show aired on CBS from 1993 to 1999, becoming an instant success, and so did Fran. In this sitcom, she played a charming and bubbly woman, named Fran Fine, who casually became the nanny of three children; with her wit and her charm, she endeared herself to their widower father Maxwell Sheffield, a stuffy, composed, proper British gentleman and a Broadway producer (played by British actor Charles Shaughnessy).

Her voice is a combination of a high nasal pitch and a New York accent that people find either annoying, endearing, or humorous (or all three). In her autobiography, Drescher discusses the fact that this is her real voice -- even though it is played up a little on-camera -- and the many voice lessons she has had to take to overcome it for movie auditions (only to have it, and her machine-gun titter, end up being her trademark). Her first book was even titled Enter Whining.

In the late 1990s, she was a defendant in a lawsuit, and later dismissed from it. Acerbic comic Dennis Miller remarked that "no one wanted to have to listen to her testify!"

During her TV experience, she also appeared in a number of films, including Jack (1996), directed by Francis Ford Coppola, The Beautician and the Beast (1997) (which she also executive produced) and Picking Up the Pieces (2000) co-starring Woody Allen. In 1999, Fran divorced her husband, Peter Jacobson.

Drescher is also a huge fan of the rock band Phish, and has been spotted at several of their concerts.

Fran Drescher was admitted to Los Angeles's Cedars Sinai Hospital on June 21, 2000, after doctors diagnosed her with uterine cancer. But emergency surgery caught it early as it was only at Stage 1 and she didn't have to undergo radiation or chemotherapy. She has been given a clean bill of health and no post-operative treatment has been ordered. She wrote about her experiences in her second book, Cancer Schmancer.

Naomi Watts (born September 28, 1968) is an Academy Award-nominated Welsh-Australian actress.

She's 38!

Watts was born in Shoreham, Kent, England, where she lived until the age of eight. Her parents, Peter and Myfanwy Watts had separated when she was four years old, and when she was seven, her father died. Following her father's death, her mother relocated the family to the town of Llangefni (more specifically Llanfawr Farm), on the Isle of Anglesey in North Wales, where they lived with Naomi's grandparents, Hugh and Nikki Roberts. Although her mother occasionally moved the family around Wales and England, usually to follow boyfriends, she always ended up returning to Llangefni. She lived there until she was 14. Then, during a trip to Australia, her mother became convinced that there was "the land of opportunities" and moved the family to Sydney in 1982. Her grandmother, Nikki, was Australian, which made it easier to obtain the documentation necessary, since Naomi and her family were entitled to Australian citizenship.

Her father was a sound engineer with Pink Floyd (his manic laugh kicks off Dark Side of the Moon) and her mother is described by Watts as a hippie "with passive-aggressive tendencies" who used to threaten to send her and her brother to foster care in order to convince her grandparents to take care of the family, since her mother had virtually no money after her father's passing.

In Sydney, she attended several acting schools (and in the very first lesson in the first school, she met Nicole Kidman, with whom she shared a taxi home from class, and is still good friends with). In 1986 she took a break from acting and went to Japan to work as a model, but the experience was fruitless, and Watts describes it as one of the worst periods of her life, which lasted for about four months. Upon returning to Australia, Watts went to work for a local department store and from there she went to work as assistant fashion editor with an Australian fashion magazine. She only returned to acting when a casual invitation from a colleague to participate in a small play rekindled her passion for the scenic arts and prompted her to quit her job and dedicate herself completely to making it as an actress.

Watts' career began in Australian television, as she appeared in commercials and television melodramas as in Home and Away and Brides of Christ. She was featured in a supporting role in the acclaimed 1991 Australian indie film Flirting which starred future Hollywood up-and-comers Nicole Kidman and Thandie Newton. As Watts made the transition from Australia to the United States, she landed a supporting role in the little seen 1995 film Tank Girl, playing the part of "Jet Girl."

Watts dated actor Heath Ledger for several years. As of 2005-2006, Watts has been dating actor Liev Schreiber. She is a close friend of fellow Australian actress Nicole Kidman, they met when they were teenagers, and Benicio Del Toro, with whom she co-starred in 21 Grams. After filming her most recent movie, The Painted Veil, she has converted to Buddhism, claiming, “I have some belief but I am not a strict Buddhist or anything yet. There was a lot of excitement and energy there.”

1968 : "Hey Jude" Breaks Records

The Beatles' single "Hey Jude" hits the top of the charts. The song had debuted two weeks earlier at No. 10, the highest spot ever achieved by a new release up to that time. Over seven minutes long, it was the longest song ever to hit No. 1, a record it holds to this day.


Paul McCartney wrote the song about the same time that John Lennon was divorcing his wife Cynthia. McCartney once claimed the song started out as "Hey, Jules," and was meant to console John and Cynthia's son, Julian. Some listeners hear the song as a prophetic lament for the approaching end of the Beatles themselves, who split up in early 1970.

Lennon and McCartney began playing music together in 1956 and by 1960 had formed the Beatles with George Harrison. The band toured German beerhouses in 1961 and debuted later that year at the Cavern Club in Liverpool, where they gave more than 300 performances during the next two years. Drummer Ringo Starr joined the group in 1962. They scored several U.K. hits in 1963, launching the Beatlemania frenzy that hit the United States in 1964. In a little more than 10 years, the group transformed rock and roll, scoring 20 No. 1 hits on the Billboard pop charts, more than any group in history. The group's records spent a total of 59 weeks topping the charts between 1964 and 1970.

Father of 'Idol' Winner Sues Publisher

The father of "American Idol" winner Fantasia Barrino has filed a $10 million libel suit against the publisher of a book about his daughter, alleging that it contains "false, exaggerated, sensational, intentional and malicious untruths."

In papers filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, Joseph Barrino is seeking damages from Simon & Schuster, which released "Fantasia: Life Is Not a Fairy Tale" in 2005. The book was made into a TV movie, starring Fantasia, that aired on the Lifetime network in August.

Among the details disputed by Joseph Barrino: that he was hostile to the music industry, that he asks his daughter for money when she visits him, that his children's musical careers were more important than their education.

"The unfortunate publication of Fantasia's life story by Simon & Schuster seeks to capitalize on her American Idol success through disparaging certain members of her family. The lawsuit seeks to redress these wrongs and restore the integrity of the family members," Joseph Barrino's attorney, Kendall Minter, said Tuesday in a statement.

Although Simon & Schuster's Web site ( http://www.simonsays.com ) lists Fantasia Barrino as the book's author, the lawsuit alleges that the singer's grandmother, Addie Collins, was the ghost writer. Fantasia Barrino was not listed as a defendant. source

Martha Stewart wants Eminem to appear on her Martha TV show. Not because he can knit or bake brownies but because audience members love his music. "We play his music during breaks to keep people very lively and they love him," Stewart told AP Radio in a recent interview.

"I would really love to have Eminem on the show," the 65-year-old lifestyle guru said. "I don't think he knows that my demographic audience is so involved in Eminem music."

Stewart said she's not good at everything. "I can't pick up a guitar and play a fantastic song. ... I cannot sit down at a piano and do that," she said. "I'm happy about my knowledge in so many different subjects relating to living, but in terms of specifics, I don't know if I'd be really very good on The Young and the Restless. "

However, Stewart does have a wild side. She licked David Letterman's jelly covered finger when he pretended to cut himself during a cooking segment with her on CBS's Late Show With David Letterman. "I knew it was jelly because I looked really carefully before I licked his finger. And I think he was looking for a reaction and didn't know what I would do," Stewart said. "I'm sure he was totally shocked that I would lick his finger, as were many, many, many other people," she said with a laugh.

Avril Ramona Lavigne (born September 27, 1984) is a Canadian pop rock singer, Juno Award-winning singer-songwriter and occasional actress. She was originally known for her "skater punk" persona, but has since shed that image in favour of a more sophisticated and feminine style. Her two albums, Let Go (2002) and Under My Skin (2004), have topped charts in several countries.

She's 22!

Lavigne is featured in Maxim Magazine's Girls of Maxim gallery. In 2006, she was included in Canadian Business Magazine's ranking of the most powerful Canadians in Hollywood, grabbing the seventh position.

Avril was born in Belleville, Ontario, to Franco-Ontarian Roman Catholic parents John and Judy Lavigne. It is said on her message board on her official website that her new album will contain 15 songs. "Of course, I still have my boy-bashing songs, but they're very playful. So the record is really fun and cool and different and honestly, I think it's my best record yet. I can say that with confidence."

In February 2004, she began dating fellow Canadian singer, Deryck Whibley; Whibley became Lavigne's second boyfriend. In June 2005 they became engaged. Whibley proposed to Lavigne by surprising her with a trip to Venice, a gondola ride, and then a romantic picnic. The couple finally married in a traditional ceremony on Saturday, July 15th, 2006 at a private estate in the California coastal city of Montecito. Lavigne wore a Vera Wang gown, carried pearl white Australian roses and was walked down the aisle by her father. Whibley wore a Hugo Boss suit and was acompanied by four best men. There were about 110 guests in attendance. When asked if they were ready for kids they said not right now but somewhere down the road.

1987 - Whitney Houston Hits No. 1

Whitney Houston's single "Didn't We Almost Have It All?" debuts. The song came from her second album, Whitney, which was released in June 1987 and became the first album by a female artist to debut at the top of the charts.

Houston was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1963. A cousin of singer Dionne Warwick and the daughter of a gospel singer, Houston grew up singing in a church choir and landed professional management by the time she was 15. She made numerous live appearances and provided guest vocals for several recordings. She also developed a modeling and acting career, appearing on magazine covers and on such sitcoms as Silver Spoons.

In 1985, she released her first album, Whitney Houston, which yielded several hit singles, including "You Give Good Love" and "Saving All My Love for You." Her next album, Whitney (1987), scored seven consecutive No. 1 singles. In the early '90s, she developed her acting career with starring roles in The Bodyguard (1992), Waiting to Exhale (1995), The Preacher's Wife (1996) and Cinderella (1997). Paris Hilton is a drunk! Singer/actress/handbag designer/heiress Paris Hilton can now add another title to her resume: Defendant.


Hilton was charged Tuesday with driving under the influence and scheduled to be arraigned Sept. 28 in Superior Court on charges of driving under the influence and driving with a blood-alcohol level of 0.08 percent, said Nick Velasquez, a spokesman for city prosecutors. Hilton is not required to appear at the arraignment, Velasquez said.

The 25-year-old Hilton was arrested Sept. 7 after being stopped in her Mercedes-Benz SLR. Police said her blood-alcohol level was 0.08 percent, the minimum to warrant an arrest. "The charges are consistent with California law and the circumstances of this case," Velasquez said.

Hilton, who once told the Los Angeles Times that the taste of booze "grosses me out," claimed she had a single margarita at a charity event the evening before her arrest.

A national research study says that a 137-pound woman would need to consume three alcoholic drinks in one hour on an empty stomach to reach a .08 percent blood-alcohol level. The fashionably slender Hilton likely weighs much less than 137 pounds.

If convicted, Hilton could be sentenced to six months in jail and fined $1,000. The minimum penalty for a first-time offender is a fine, probation and alcohol-rehabilitation program.

No matter how 'G' you wanna keep it on the industry tip, you don't want to do that to somebody especially if it's genuine. We've been together for a little bit now."

Alcohol Ads Suddenly Awkward for Paris

New rule: If you’ve been arrested for DUI, stay out of alcohol advertising for a while.

Paris Hilton’s DUI bust earlier this month is a sucker punch to Italian wine-maker Prosecco, which hired the heiress to endorse its Rich line of sparkling wines. (See some photos from her ad shoot here.)

Road-safety advocates in Italy say Paris isn’t worthy of the endorsement job. Says one: “She has just been arrested for drunk driving and a few days later she is promoting an alcoholic drink. What sot of image is that?”

Rehab

Contrary to CNN's false accusations, I did not check myself into an eating disorder rehab. I dont know why or how this rumor started, but i am home, in LA, and very happy. I do not have an eating disorder, and I don't know how many times I have to say it. Ive repeated myself so many times, I feel like a broken record. Who ever started this rumor is evil and mean, but its not true. I am happy, and healthy, and living my life.

1963 - Annette Funicello's First Beach Film

Beach Party, starring Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon, debuts. The film was the first of several such frothy beach films for the pair-they also starred together in Muscle Beach Party (1964) and How to Stuff a Wild Bikini (1965).

Funicello started out as one of the Mouseketeers on the TV show The Mickey Mouse Club in the 1950s. Avalon was a popular singer. The pair reunited for Back to the Beach in 1987.

Janet Jackson hasn't spoken to Justin Timberlake since the infamous "wardrobe malfunction" at the 2004 Super Bowl – but she plans to reconcile with him in her own time, she revealed on The Oprah Winfrey Show Monday.

"We haven't spoken. But I consider him a friend, and I'm very loyal, and friendship is very important to me," Jackson, 40, told Winfrey. "He has reached out to speak with me. Like I said, friendship is very important to me – and certain things you just don't do to friends. And in my own time, I'll give him a call."

Asked if she felt Timberlake failed to stick up for her after the incident, in which he ripped her bustier, exposing her breast to millions of viewers, Jackson replied, "To a certain degree, yeah."

Jackson, who releases her album 20 Y.O. on Tuesday, feels that she unfairly bore the brunt of the criticism after the Super Bowl performance – a sentiment Timberlake seems to agree with. "If there was something I could have done in her defense that was more than I realized then, I would have," he told MTV recently. "I probably got 10 percent of the blame."

Still Jackson says she was shocked at the intensity of the scrutiny over the incident, which she deemed an accident. "So much more important things were going on in the world. And the focus was on my breast? That didn't make any sense to me."

Yes, that's Audrey Hepburn dancing across your TV screen in the latest Gap ad. The actress, whose Funny Face character stylishly grooves to AC/DC's Back in Black, is not only the retailer's marketing focus, but also its muse.

"We wanted to do something really special to re-launch our skinny black pants and thought, who better to showcase them?" says Trey Laird, creative director of Gap. The actress' son Sean Ferrer, chairman of the Audrey Hepburn Children's Fund, approved the campaign as "a perfect representation of her."

Personally... I think it's bad taste produced to match. In all honesty, if Audrey were alive I seriously doubt, even if paid, she would have agreed to this.

Linda Louise, Lady McCartney (September 24, 1941 – April 17, 1998) was an American photographer, perhaps best known for her marriage to Sir Paul McCartney, of The Beatles.

She Would Have Been 65!

Eastman was born Linda Louise Eastman in New York, New York to a Jewish family. She grew up in the wealthy Scarsdale area of Westchester County, New York and graduated from Scarsdale High School in 1959. Her father, Lee Eastman, was songwriter Jack Lawrence's attorney, and at the senior Eastman's request, Lawrence titled a song "Linda" in honor of then five-year-old Linda. Her mother was Louise Linder Eastman, heiress to the Linder Department Store fortune.

Before her marriage to Paul McCartney, she was a professional photographer in the rock and roll scene, and served as the house photographer for the Fillmore East in New York City. She was a top photographer and took professional portraits of artists such as Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Eric Clapton, Simon and Garfunkel, The Who, The Doors and The Rolling Stones. McCartney's first marriage was to John Melville See, Jr. who she met at the University of Arizona. They married on June 18, 1962 and their daughter Heather Louise was born December 31, 1962. They were divorced in June 1965. She met her second husband, Paul McCartney, while photographing bands in London for a book titled Rock and Other Four Letter Words in 1967. They met at a night club called the Bag o' Nails in May of 1967, when she arrived to photograph The Beatles, and they married on 12 March 1969, eight days before John Lennon married Yoko Ono. McCartney was already pregnant with daughter Mary McCartney at the time of their marriage. She and her husband raised four children: Heather Louise (from her previous marriage, whom Paul adopted), Mary Anna, Stella Nina, and James Louis. She has three grandsons, all born after her death: Mary's two sons Arthur Alistair Donald, (born 3 April 1999) and Elliot Donald (born 1 August 2002) and Stella's son Miller Alasdhair James Willis (born 25 February 2005). Daughter Stella is expecting her second child with husband Aladshair Willis, which would make this Linda's fourth grandchild.

Paul McCartney recently revealed that his wife made an uncredited vocal contribution to the Beatles song "Let It Be" during the band's recording of the album of the same name in early 1969. After the breakup of the Beatles in 1970, Paul began teaching her to play keyboards, and included her in the lineup for his new band, Wings.

When breast cancer claimed her life in 1998, her widower suggested that fans remember her by donating to breast-cancer research charities that do not support animal-testing, "or the best tribute — go veggie". Linda McCartney died on 17 April 1998 on the McCartney family ranch in Tucson, Arizona. Her husband and four children were at her bedside, and they each took a turn in saying goodbye.

• The 200th episode of The Simpsons, "Trash of the Titans", was dedicated to her memory.
• Attended the University of Arizona where she studied art history, and met her first husband John Melvin See Jr. See fathered her first child, Heather McCartney, who was later legally adopted by Paul.
• Her mother, Louise Linder Eastman, was tragically killed in a plane crash in 1962 when Linda was only 20 years old.
• Dated actor Warren Beatty before she met future husband Paul McCartney.
• Attended Sarah Lawrence College, where John Lennon's widow Yoko Ono also studied. Neither received degrees from the school.
• Attended The Beatles' historic 1965 concert at Shea Stadium years before she met her future husband. Reportedly was more attracted to John Lennon at first, seeing him in the media, but liked McCartney better in person.

Teacher in "Hot Water" for Oprah For President Campaign

Patrick Crowe says he is having a blast promoting talk-show icon Oprah Winfrey for president. Winfrey's lawyers are not.

Crowe has been unofficially campaigning for the first lady of daytime TV for years. The Kansas City man's Web site, www.oprah08.net, comes complete with a campaign song and volunteer sign-up. He also sells "Oprah for President" T-shirts. I would so wear one of the shirts... funny.

The retired math teacher's unflappable support has recently drawn the ire of Winfrey's lawyers, who sent Crowe a letter on Aug. 22 demanding that he remove her picture from the Web site and a book he is selling. The letter said Crowe's zeal has crossed into copyright and trademark infringements. (translated, they see profits that Oprah should be receiving... she didn't get the way she is by being frugal)

But Crowe is persistent. The Web site remained up Saturday, and he has been fielding requests for radio interviews. It's still up as of Sunday, 11:20 MT.

"It has become increasingly serious to me," Crowe, who opposes the Bush administration and its foreign policy, told The Kansas City Star for a story Friday. "I know Oprah can do better than that."

Crowe believes Winfrey could bridge partisan lines with her charm. He also noted Winfrey's business acumen, widespread name recognition and reputation as a woman of compassion and determination.

A spokeswoman for Harpo said that Winfrey has said she has no political aspirations.

Tom Cruise & Katie Holmes were in Las Vegas this weekend. TomKat and family were in Sin City to celebrate the 70th birthday of Tom's mom and fellow Scientologist, Mary Lee.

On Friday night, Tom, Katie, Connor & Isabella, plus six other family members caught the 7:30 PM performance of the the Beatles' LOVE by Cirque du Soleil at the Mirage.

The performers sang Happy Birthday and snickered about his shortness and craziness behind his back.

Ludacris Ready to "Make Nice" with Oprah

Ludacris ' new album, "Release Therapy" (out Sept. 26), is definitely uppermost on his mind these days. But the rapper/actor, whose film credits include "Crash" and "Hustle & Flow," recently took the time to discuss Oprah Winfrey. (she's made it "known", regarding her distaste for rap music)

I would like to reconcile our differences. People can disagree but still love and respect one another at the end of the day. Because of her lack of knowledge about hip-hop, I want to explain it to her. Which I did then (during his appearance on Winfrey's show to promote last year's "Crash"), but a lot of my comments were edited out and then the media blew the situation out of proportion ... I had to sit there and represent on behalf of all the hip-hop community. I just want her to understand and respect my opinion because I respect hers.

1966 - Rolling Stones Concert Interrupted By Fans

Officials at England's Royal Albert concert hall temporarily stop a Rolling Stones concert when screaming girls attack Mick Jagger onstage. The riotous enthusiasm of the fans resulted in a ban of pop concerts at the hall.

The Stones had gained a tremendous following since Mick Jagger and Keith Richards pulled the band together in the early 1960s. Jagger and Richards had been pals in grade school and met again years later, when Jagger was studying at the London School of Economics and Richards was at art school. Joined by guitarist Brian Jones and, later, by bassist Bill Wyman and drummer Charlie Watts, the band started out playing nightclubs and bars and released its first single in Britain in 1963.

Before long, the Stones became known as the anti-Beatles: They were long-haired, grungy, and wild, whereas the Beatles seemed wholesome and safe. A string of drug-related arrests plagued various band members--Brian Jones' drug problems probably led to his death in 1969 and Keith Richards struggled with heroin addiction before getting clean in 1977.

Meanwhile, the band steadily released hit albums and songs that became instant classics. Richards and Jagger began writing songs together, and after 1966 they wrote almost all of the group's material. The group first topped the U.S. charts in 1965 with "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction." Hit singles in 1966 included "Paint It Black;" "19th Nervous Breakdown;" and "Get Off My Cloud." They released hit-packed albums throughout the 1970s and managed to maintain their following even in middle age. In the 1980s, Jagger and Richards both released various solo albums but continued to work together. Steel Wheels, the group's 1989 album, sold two million copies, and the tour grossed $140 million. The band's 1994 album, Voodoo Lounge, won Best Rock Album, the Stones' first Grammy. In addition, the Rolling Stones released a greatest hits CD, Forty Licks, in 2002. Then on Sept. 6, 2005, the band dropped yet another CD titled, A Bigger Bang. This new collection of songs was followed by a world tour.

BLOATED and disgusting, Brandon Davis, was punched in the face Thursday night by Kevin Connolly, who stars on “Entourage.”

After an US Weekly party at L.A. hot spot Area, Paris Hilton held an after-hours bash at her Beverly Hills home. Pamela Anderson, Courtney Love, Dave Navarro - and past Hilton conquests Paris Latsis and Stavros Niarchos - arrived with Davis, Nicky Hilton and Nicky’s boyfriend, Connolly. One partier told us: “Brandon and Nicky decided to run around and call everyone a ‘loser’ or ‘whore’ - like the way other people call each other ’sweety’ or ‘honey’. ”

Connolly didn’t like either word and when the oil heir wouldn’t stop, Connolly “smacked him.”

Davis, grandson of the late oil billionaire Marvin Davis, shrieked and cursed insults, prompting Connolly to “punch him in the face two times.” After the beat-down, Connolly told blogger Perez Hilton: “He just can’t talk to me the way he talks to other people.”

Another shock came later when Hilton nemesis Lindsay Lohan and several friends crashed the party. One observer, who was shocked Lohan had invaded her enemy’s lair, said, “Paris has done so many mean things to Lindsay.”

September 23rd, 2006 - Happy Birthday Ray Charles!

Legendary performer Ray Charles was born Ray Charles Robinson on September 23, 1930. Charles overcame the handicap of blindness to become a pioneering American pianist and soul musician who shaped the sound of rhythm and blues and brought a soulful sound to everything from country music to pop standards to a now-famous rendition of "America the Beautiful." Frank Sinatra called him "the only true genius in the business."

He would have been 76!

Ray Charles Robinson was born in Albany, Georgia to Bailey and Aretha Robinson. The family moved to the small Florida hamlet of Greenville when he was only a few months old. The elder Bailey had two more families, leaving his mother to raise the family.

When Ray was five, his four year old brother, George, drowned in an outside tub. Ray witnessed him fall and tried to pull him out, but George was too heavy for Ray.

Not long from this event, Ray began to go blind. He was totally blind by the age of seven. According to Mr. Charles, the causes were undiagnosed. However there are sources which attribute Ray's blindness to glaucoma. He attended school at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind in St. Augustine, Florida as a charity case, and he learned how to read braille there. He also learned how to write music and play various musical instruments. While he was there, his mother died. His father died two years later.

After he left school, Charles began working as a musician in Florida in several bands that played in various styles including jazz and country music. Charles moved to Seattle in 1947, at the age of seventeen. He soon started recording, first for the label Swingtime Records, achieving his first hit songs with "Confession Blues" (1949) and "Baby, Let Me Hold Your Hand" (1951) before signing with Atlantic Records in 1952. When he entered show business, his name was shortened to Ray Charles to avoid confusion with boxer Sugar Ray Robinson.

In 2002 Charles headlined during the Cognac festival in southern France. At one point in the performance a young fan rose to his feet and began to sing an a cappella version of Charles' early song, Mess Around. Charles adored this show of respect and bravery and decided to show this fan his admiration by playing the song.

One of Charles' last public performances was in 2003 at a televised annual electronic media journalist banquet held in Washington, D.C. He performed "Georgia On My Mind" and "America the Beautiful." Ray Charles' final public appearance came on April 30, 2004, at the dedication of his music studio as a historic landmark in the city of Los Angeles.

He died at age 73 on June 10, 2004 (11:35 a.m.) of "acute liver disease" (not liver cancer as was erroneously reported on certain websites) at his home in Beverly Hills, California, surrounded by family and friends. He was interred in the Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood, California.

His final album, Genius Loves Company, released two months after his death, consists of duets with various admirers and contemporaries: B.B. King, Van Morrison, Willie Nelson, James Taylor, Gladys Knight, Michael McDonald, Natalie Cole, Elton John, Bonnie Raitt, Diana Krall, Norah Jones, Idina Menzel, and Johnny Mathis. The album won 8 Grammy Awards, including 5 for Ray Charles for Best Pop Vocal Album, Album of the Year, Record of the Year and Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals for "Here We Go Again" with Norah Jones, and Best Gospel Performance for "Heaven Help Us All" with Gladys Knight; he also received nods for his duets with Elton John and B.B. King.

Out of all of the songs from his huge catalogue of recordings, Ray requested Harold Arlen's "Somewhere Over The Rainbow", a duet recorded with Johnny Mathis, be played at his memorial service.

Lindsay Lohan & Harry Morton: It's Over?

Lindsay Lohan and Harry Morton split up Thursday, multiple sources confirmed– but now they seem to be speaking again. "They are together now," Lohan's rep states.

A source close to the actress adds: "They argue, they don't argue." At the moment, "They're communicating. They're hanging out. Whatever's going to transpire there is going to transpire."

The outlook for the couple was more dire on Thursday. "Harry broke up with Lindsay yesterday at Chateau Marmont after they had dinner on the courtyard patio. Nothing happened at dinner, but shortly afterward, he broke up with her."

Why the split? "She was too much drama," says a source close to Harry. "Lindsay did cut down on the partying, but with her it's all relative. Harry is sober. It wasn't the partying that broke them up. Harry's more low-key and not into the same stuff she's into."

However, the Lohan pal says, "No one 'dumped' anyone. You don't dump people when you're 20 and 25. You have a mature relationship, and you take a break and you see what happens. Everyone does that."

Who are they kidding? Harry found out she's a nudist (crotch shots) and didn't want to be associated with her flashings. [heh]

Joan Marie Jett (born September 22, 1958) is an American rock and roll guitarist, singer, and actress best known for her hit "I Love Rock 'N Roll," which was #1 on the Billboard charts from March 20 to May 8 of 1982.

She's 48!

Joan Jett was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as Joan Marie Larkin, but later changed her surname to Jett, her mother's maiden name, after her parents divorced. She later moved to Hollywood, California, where, when still in her teens, she first gained attention as the guitarist, main songwriter and back-up singer in the pioneering all-women band The Runaways, known for pre-punk hard rock and the classic song "Cherry Bomb." Once lead singer Cherie Currie left the band, Joan assumed the duties of lead vocalist. Although the band was misconstrued in the U.S. as a novelty act, they were more popular in Japan.

After the Runaways disbanded in 1979, Jett produced an album for Los Angeles punk rock band, The Germs, then embarked on a solo career. Although she approached many labels, not one would sign her due to the stigma that accompanied her former band, The Runaways, and so she and manager and co-writer Kenny Laguna created their own independent record label, Blackheart Records to release recordings by her new band distributed by Boardwalk Records, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.

With the Blackhearts, she had several singles in the top ten, including the #1 "I Love Rock 'N Roll" cover, originally by The Arrows, as well as covers of Tommy James' "Crimson and Clover" and Gary Glitter's "Do You Wanna Touch Me". "Bad Reputation", whose accompanying video narrates the story of the rejection of Joan by major labels and the creation of her own record label, was also a hit. During this time, Jett toured relentlessly. One of the highlights of her live performance is the cover of the AC/DC song "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap". Unfortunately Boardwalk Records went under after the death of its founder Neil Bogart, and Jett and Laguna never received the money they were owed from the massive hit "I Love Rock'n Roll".

oan Jett and the Blackhearts are heading out across the United States on a Fall 2006 club tour in support of their new album Sinner with Eagles Of Death Metal. Various other bands like Valient Thorr, The Vacancies, Throw Rag and Riverboat Gamblers will hook up with the tour for a handful of dates each. This tour kicks off October 12, 2006 in Philadelphia, PA at Theater Of Living Arts and concludes November 19, 2006 in North Myrtle Beach, SC at House Of Blues.

Joan Jett has just released a new album, Sinner, on Blackheart Records, her own label. A handful of the songs on the album were co-written by Kathleen Hanna, who provides guest vocals on the album as well.

Joan's primary focus remains on recording and touring. Rumours of a Runaways reunion have sparked new interest in her old band, and the members are known to be friends. Joan has recently released material by Cherie Curie on Blackheart Records.

In 2005 Joan was recruited by Steven Van Zandt to join original Rolling Stones manager/producer Andrew Loog Oldham, former Runaways manager Kim Fowley, humorist/producer Martin Lewis and others by hosting her own radio show on Van Zandt's Underground Garage radion channel heard throughout America on Sirius Satellite Radio. She hosts a a 4-hour show entitled Joan Jett's Radio Revolution - heard every Saturday and Sunday.

Joan recently toured with her protegės The Vacancies onstage, and is currently touring on the 2006 version of the popular Warped Tour.

A Bit of Trivia:

• There is speculation that Jett is a lesbian. When an interviewer asked her, "I've seen a lot of stories that describe you as an 'out lesbian rocker.' When did you officially come out?", Jett replied, "I never made any kind of statement about my personal life on any level. I never made any proclamations. So I don't know where people are getting that from.".

• May 15, 2006 ... Joan visited the Pentagon for a meet-and-greet, and many photographs were taken with personnel. She has been a consistent supporter of the US Armed Forces.

• Jett is left-handed, but plays the guitar right-handed.
• In 2006, actress and model Carmen Electra, who is featured in the music video for Jett's A.C.D.C. admitted she grew up with a secret lesbian crush on Jett since Electra was eight years old.

Paris Hilton Eats Fred Durst!

My buddy, MK, with PopBytes, had an exclusive sighting of Paris "the ho" Hilton. She was leaving some crappy restaurant with Fred Durst. I'm thinking she wants to be Pamela Anderson or Heather Locklear and snag herself a rocker with tattoo's. (Travis Barker anyone?) Hey... who is the guy on the right, greasy Brandon Davis?

i just spotted paris hilton leaving the parking garage behind my building after having lunch with fred durst at the hamburger hamlet on hollywood blvd! who knows why they would eat there...it's not very good! anyways when they came walking around the corner i wanted to snap some more pics but no one else was around and i'm not the type to just shove a camera in someone's face so i just took one after they passed me (i don't know who the person is on her right side is) gosh she must like tattoo boys...first travis barker and now mr. durst (who looks like he lost a lot of weight btw) they both took off in separate cars - fred in a small BMW and paris in her silver range rover!

1985 - Dire Straits Tops The Charts

"Money for Nothing" by Dire Straits becomes the No. 1 song on the Billboard charts.

Songwriter and band member Mark Knopfler wrote the song after he heard a worker at an electronics store making fun of MTV. He scribbled down the man's monologue and turned it into song lyrics.

The song featured backup vocals by Sting singing "I want my MTV" to the tune of "Don't Stand So Close to Me" by the Police.

Nicole Camille Richie (born September 21, 1981) is an American socialite, author, actress, and singer, and is best known for being the daughter of singer Lionel Richie and for her role in The Simple Life.

She's 25!

Nicole Richie was born in Berkeley, California. Her biological father is widely rumored to be Afro-Latino musician Pete Escovedo, brother of 1980s pop percussionist Sheila E. and son of famed Latin percussionist Pete Escovedo, but this was directly denied by Nicole in the November 2005 issue of Jane magazine. According to an April 2006 Tatler magazine interview with Nicole, her biological father was a drummer who worked with Lionel Richie; her biological mother was a backstage assistant for Lionel. When Nicole was 3, Lionel and his wife Brenda Harvey-Richie informally adopted her and raised her as their daughter. When she was 9, they went through the legal formalities of the adoption; she still speaks with her biological mother who is also of Afro-Latin diaspora - currently resides in the Dominican Republic. On the The Tyra Banks Show in September 2006, Nicole said of her heritage that she was a "mix of everything" but when asked she just says she is black american. Her godfather is Michael Jackson.

A year later, Lionel and Brenda split, and in their guilt over the separation, "Their way of making me happy was to say yes to everything I wanted, but I don't think a little girl should have that much freedom," said Richie in an interview with Vanity Fair magazine. She used marijuana, cocaine, and heroin, was arrested three times, and was involved in five car accidents. Not until she went into drug rehabilitation in 2003 did Richie and her parents have an open conversation about her addiction."I'm now, at 24, just learning to deal with my problems instead of concealing them with drugs," she said in the interview.

Nicole has studied the cello, violin, piano, and figure skating, and has plans to pursue a music career. She also attended the University of Arizona for two years after graduating from high school. She stated, "I went to the University of Arizona. I stopped because I went there for two years and I felt like I experienced college or whatever. I'm over it."

In February of 2003, Richie was arrested in Malibu, California, and charged with possession of heroin. She has since been a patient in a drug-rehabilitation hospital.

In December 2003, she publicly spoke out in defense of her godfather Michael Jackson following his accusations of child molestation.

Following the 2003 Billboard Music Awards, the FCC received 80,000 complaints after Richie said "fucking" and "shit" during the show's broadcast (the network didn't edit the words). This was the FCC's complaint record, until it was broken following Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake's appearance at Super Bowl XXXVIII. The FCC ruled that the words were indecent, but did not fine FOX.

In early 2005, Richie received tabloid speculation of having an eating disorder. Richie, however, said that "I've always been really skinny. I just went through a heavier stage after rehab and during Simple Life 1. Now I have a trainer and the weight has gradually come off." She also claims that she does not have a current battle with an eating disorder. Like many other young stars, Nicole claims she is targeted with rumors involving her personal life. The ever-present rumor involving Nicole has a direct relationship with her weight.

Richie, however, acknowledged in a May 2006 Vanity Fair interview that she knew that she was too thin and stated that she was on the path to gaining weight, adding that she was worried young girls would want to look like her.

Though recently on an August 2006 issue of "OK!" it stated Richie only eats one meal a day. Ignoring doctor's warnings, she works out at least an hour a day, and reported that she eats when she sees a picture opportunity. Her friend adds that, "She wants to gain at least 10 pounds, but the very idea of adding 10 extra pounds into her body is unbearable for her".

Recently, Nicole appeared in a music video with her father for "I Call It Love", opposite CSI: Miami actor Adam Rodriguez.

Nicole's stylist, Rachel Zoe, is also the stylist of three of her friends, Mischa Barton, Lindsay Lohan and Andrew Brin.
