1976 : "Disco Duck" tops the charts
"Disco Duck," a satiric send-up of the 1970s disco craze, becomes a No. 1 hit on this day in 1976.
The song, by Memphis disk jockey Rick Dees, became a national hit, but Dees was fired for talking about the song on his morning program.
He landed a job with a rival station and was later transferred to Los Angeles, where he became one of the most popular disk jockeys in the country.
He released several more parodies, but only "Get Nekked," released in 1984, hit the charts.

The actress is being dragged to testify in a lawsuit against her mother. Dina Lohan is being accused of theft and fraud relating to a 2002 music deal.
When presented with the papers, an onlooker said, "Lindsay was absolutely horrified and threw the papers on the ground."Poor Lindsay. One parent is in jail, and the other may be going there soon!
Brandon Davis, who once said that Lindsay Lohan was broke, because "she only had like $7 million"...looks like he's the broke one now. Apparently, Brandon has bounced a $10,000 check he wrote to Joe Francis of Girls Gone Wild.
The Davis family may be running out of cash. Brandon's mom is selling her $15 million Bel Air home and his aunt is suing the family for more inheritance.Forgive me, but I find tremendous humor in this asshole's pain.

John Clayton Mayer genre with the formation of the (b. October 16, 1977) is an American Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter and guitarist. Originally from Connecticut, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia, in 1998. He soon made a name for himself, and has had success both commercially and critically. After originally performing mainly acoustic pop, in 2005 he made a transition towards the bluesJohn Mayer Trio.

Mayer's other interests include stand-up comedy and writing; he has written articles for several magazines, most notably Esquire. He also enjoyes writing in his blog at johnmayer.com.
Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Mayer grew up in Fairfield, Connecticut, the second of three sons. There, he became friends with future tennis star James Blake. Mayer attended Fairfield High School (now Fairfield Ward High School) for his freshman, sophomore, and senior years, but attended Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk, Connecticut for his junior year, where he was enrolled in the Center for Global Studies at Brien McMahon High School. Then known as the Center for Japanese Studies Abroad, it is a magnet program for students in Fairfield County wanting to learn Japanese.
Mayer listened to pop music, but it was not until the age of thirteen that his inspiration for playing the guitar began. When his father, a high school principal, gave him a confiscated tape player that contained an album by Stevie Ray Vaughan, Mayer discovered the blues and learned how to play the guitar. After two years of practice, he started playing at blues bars and other venues in the area. While in high school, he was in a band called Villanova Junction with Joe Beleznay, Tim Procaccini, and Rich Wolf.
Mayer has a number of tattoos. These include: "Home Life" on the back of his arm (after the song off of the Heavier Things album), "SRV" (for his idol Stevie Ray Vaughan), "77" (his year of birth) on his left pectoralis major, and a Japanese style fish on his right deltoid. In 2003, he got a tattoo of three squares on his right forearm, which sparked a lot of questions. Mayer explains that he likes getting tattoos, but not having too many, so he will fill the three squares in gradually. As of 2006, two are filled.
Mayer also has a extensive collection of sneakers, estimated (in 2006) at over 200 pairs.
Mayer dated Jennifer Love Hewitt briefly in 2002. In a comedy routine in May 2006, he joked they never consummated their relationship; he later apologized to her for the raunchy routine.
According to the August 29, 2006, issue of People, Mayer was rumored to be in a relationship with singer Jessica Simpson. The article actually followed a US Weekly magazine report claiming a confirmation for Simpson. However, when asked by Rosie O'Donnell in a September 5, 2006, episode of The View, Simpson stated "I am not actually dating John Mayer." It has since been reported that there was a brief fling between the two, but Mayer called in quits after Simpson's PR team went public with the relationship. It is said that he felt Simpson was 'desperate.'
John currently resides in a suburb of Los Angeles (as of 2006) with his roommate (and sound technician) Chad Franscoviak. He also has an apartment in New York City, where he lives alone.
When he was seventeen, he was suddenly stricken with a cardiac arrhythmia that sent him to the hospital for a weekend. The trauma of the incident sparked his songwriting, and he penned his first lyrics the night he got home. Shortly thereafter, he began suffering from crippling panic attacks, he keeps a Xanax (an anti-anxiety drug) with him, just in case.

And there have even been suggestions that the family Holmes is threatening a last-minute boycott of the wedding to try to convince Katie to have a proper Catholic ceremony, even if she does one Scientology-style, too.
Katie was born a Roman Catholic and went to parochial schools growing up in Toledo, Ohio, and so it would only be fitting for her to be married with the usual Catholic rites -- not in a Scientology ceremony, in which the bride is sometimes called a "girl" marrying a "man" and in which one of the solemn "pacts" of marriage is that the couple agree not to go to bed angry. Vanessa Marcil (born Vanessa Ortiz on October 15, 1969 in Indio, California) is an American actress known for her roles in the series General Hospital and Las Vegas.
She's 37!
Marcil acted in a number of theatre productions before landing the role of Brenda Barrett on the soap opera General Hospital in 1992. She garnered three Daytime Emmy Award nominations (1997, 1998 and 2003) for her portrayal, winning in 2003 as "Outstanding Supporting Actress." In February 1998, she was named "Outstanding Lead Actress" at the Soap Opera Digest Awards.
After six years on General Hospital, she left the show in 1998 (returning briefly in '03) to star in the made-for-television movie To Love, Honor and Deceive, and had a recurring guest role on the police drama High Incident produced by Steven Spielberg. Marcil joined the cast of Beverly Hills 90210 in November 1998 as Gina Kincaid and remained with the show for one-and-a-half seasons.
Marcil made her feature film debut in the 1996 film The Rock, in which she starred opposite Nicolas Cage, Sean Connery and Ed Harris. In 1999, she starred in two independent films: Nice Guys Sleep Alone with Sean O'Bryan and This Space Between Us with Jeremy Sisto.
Marcil was awarded the 2001 "Sojourn Service Award" and has supported Sojourn Services for Battered Women and their children by hosting charity events and making appearances on Wheel of Fortune, playing for funds for the organization. Through her fundraising efforts, she hopes to increase awareness of domestic violence and inspire battered woman to take control of their lives.
Marcil currently stars in the television series Las Vegas. She's been featured in several Men's magazines, including Stuff, FHM, and Maxim. She was named #19 on Maxim's Hot 100 of 2005 list and was featured on the cover of the issue that included the list, as well as #92 in the 2006 FHM Hot 100 list.
Marcil was rumored to have married actor Corey Feldman in 1989, but she has denied this in interviews. She was engaged to General Hospital co-star Tyler Christopher, but the two never married. She dated former Beverly Hills 90210 castmate Brian Austin Green until early 2003 (they were widely reported to have been engaged, but Marcil denied this in an interview with Stuff magazine). They have a son, Kassius Lijah Marcil-Green, born on March 30, 2002. She currently lives with her son in Los Angeles.

The celebrities came out for the 21st Annual American Cinematheque Award Show held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, honoring George Clooney. The award is given to actors who make significant contributions to motion pictures.

1911 : Mary Pickford wins lawsuit
Mary Pickford's contract with Independent Moving Pictures (IMP) is voided when a court rules that she cannot be held to a contract she signed as a minor. Pickford leaves IMP and joins the Majestic studio.
Pickford was the first true movie star. Before Pickford, studios refused to identify their actors by name, correctly fearing that name recognition would drive up actors' salaries. Though audiences didn't know her name, Pickford's golden curls won her attention and adoration. A shrewd negotiator, Pickford capitalized on her fame by moving from one studio to another, boosting her salary each time and insisting on being named in the movie credits. Pickford later became a producer and remained a powerful Hollywood force long after her retirement from acting in 1933. She died at the age of 87 in 1979.
Ralph Lauren (born Ralph Lifschitz on October 14, 1939) is an American fashion designer and business executive.
Born in the New York City borough of the Bronx to Jewish immigrants Fraydl (Kotlar) and Frank Lifschitz, his father was a house painter. There are many parallels with the late Robert Denning, the interior designer. Both grew up without fashion, but went on to create for others an environment of society, old money and country-club style. Although neither had any exposure to this world as a child, each was able to visualize and create his dream. For Lauren this look would eventually become Polo Ralph Lauren.

From a very young age, Ralph started working after school to earn money to buy stylish, expensive suits. He preferred quality over quantity. His attire soon gave him a trendy reputation among his peers.
Ralph attended DeWitt Clinton High School, on number 42 Mosholu Parkway, in the Bronx. Others who attended this school include Burt Lancaster, Robert Klein, and Stan Lee. At age 16, Ralph and his brothers Jerry and Lenny changed their last name from Lifschitz to Lauren. Some consider this a denial of their Jewish heritage; Ralph considered it necessary for success.
He went to the City College of New York where he studied Business and dropped out after two years. From 1962 to 1964, he served in the United States Army. After his discharge, in 1964, he married Ricky Low-Beer. He did not attend fashion school, but worked for Brooks Brothers as a salesman and created the label Polo, a necktie business. He later purchased this name from his initial backer, Norman Hilton. Lauren's fashion empire has since grown into a billion-dollar business.
In 1984 he recreated the Rhinelander Mansion, a former home of the photographer Edgar de Evia and Robert Denning, into the flagship store for Polo Ralph Lauren. This same year de Evia photographed the Lauren home at Round Hill in Jamaica for House & Garden.
In the mid 1990s, Polo Ralph Lauren became a public company, traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol RL.
Ralph and his wife, Ricky, have two sons and a daughter: Andrew, David, and Dylan. David is an executive at Polo Ralph Lauren. Dylan owns and operates an upscale candy store, Dylan's Candy Bar, at 59th Street and Third Avenue in Manhattan.
Lauren is also well-known as a collector of classic automobiles. His cars have won best in show at the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance multiple times. His collection was recently displayed at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
